Uncovering the Secrets of Great Presentations

I recently had the privilege of being present in a class giving out wonderful presentations about how to deliver great presentations. This took place in my introduction to public speaking class and I can already say that I love it already! Only on the first day I was able to learn so much & I feel super confident after listening and taking notes throughout the presentations. I found myself amazed at all the things shared during the presentations. Every group delivered great presentations & can you believe it was only the second class?! As somebody who aspires to be a nurse and wants to learn how to communicate effectively with people and deliver great communication skills, this was all just perfect and very fitting for me.

The presentations went from chapters one all the way through chapter 17. The topics of each chapter range from “The important tricks for a great presentation” all the way to “The different types of wonderful presentations for us to learn”. In between that there were so many things to learn! Things such as: evolving art of public speaking, building your confidence, developing a purpose and topic, and so much more was offered throughout the presentations!

We started off with Group 1 and their area of focus was “Public Speaking, The Evolving Art”. I really enjoyed the graphics they had and the way they went about their presentation. Providing the definition to things is something super useful when talking to an audience so everybody can understand what is being said. Group 1 did an excellent job in delivering with their definitions and examples. I was taken away when they also put in how public speaking is today because they provided the audience with a consent of before and after. The things I picked up from the presentation was that to deliver  a great presentation, mastering effective speaking techniques across diverse settings is crucial. Whether addressing a small or a large audience, it is super important to maintain clarity, pace, and an appropriate tone because this all ensures engagement. I really enjoyed the breathing exercise that was shared with us from group 1, I actually started doing them myself. We learned so much throughout this presentation, I also feel it is very important to note that we should practice our presentations until we feel confident to avoid feeling nervous. Group 1 excelled with their presentation!

As we look into more groups, we come across Group 2. Group 2 gets into the getting ready for success part of presentations.  This sets a base to really prepare us for a good presentation. The presentation begins by emphasizing the importance of developing a clear purpose and topic for any and all presentations, and highlighting how important this is for engaging and having effective communication with your audience. It then goes into ways on how to research your topic thoroughly and how important good sources that are credible are. We are then given the details on how to avoid plagiarism, and we are walked through organizing and outlining our speeches prior to a presentation. This ensures that we have a smooth flow, clear structure, and great transitions when going from one topic to another. Throughout the presentation we are given great tips and examples are even shared on how we can get closer to a great presentation and how to prepare for them.

Getting Closer to a great presentation is a moment we all feel creeping up on us, and while it makes some of us feel nervous, others feel just fine. Group 3 went ahead and gave out a great presentation on ways to prepare for when that great presentation is approaching. To start strong, we must begin with a compelling opening that grabs your audience's attention and clearly states the purpose. We need to keep our communication barrier and language efficient by using simple words and avoiding unnecessary things that would confuse the audience. When we go into the interpretation part of slides or charts, we must make sure they enhance the message trying to get delivered rather than distract from the presentation. Using visuals can be very appealing and helpful as long as they’re clear to understand. We must always speak clearly and at a regular pace, while maintaining confidence. We must take note of keeping eye contact and doing all this while we present. Finally, we must end our speech with a memorable conclusion that reinforces your main message and leaves a lasting impression on your audience. By following these steps and focusing on being clear and engaging with your audience you will be well prepared to give out a great presentation. Just prepare for all this prior and you’ll be justly right!

At the last group to present, they came with different types of presentations to learn. Learning about different types of presentations can be helpful with teaching us how to communicate effectively in various situations. Informative speaking is all about sharing facts, or things that are backed up by credible sources. This can help organize and allow the delivery of a clear message. Persuasive speaking is different because persuasive speaking aims to convince others to take a specific action or have a specific viewpoint by using evidence and compelling arguments. The understanding of arguments involves recognizing the structure and logic behind different points of views as well as helping us analyze and respond appropriately. Special occasion presentations are tailored for specific events or ceremonies, for example: We have a ceremony of athletic awards coming, we’d have a presentation having to do with the achievements of those athletes and nothing else. Now group presentations are different to that because group presentations can be collaborating together to deliver any type of message, this does require a lot of coordination and teamwork. By learning about all different types of presentations we can develop the skills necessary to communicate effectively, confidently, and successfully whether we are persuading, informing, celebrating, or simply collaborating with others.
